Massive Neurocysticercosis: Encephalitic versus Non-encephalitic

چکیده
Most patients with neurocysticercosis have few intracranial lesions. However, a small subset show development of massive infections that may be divided into encephalitic and nonencephalitic. Proper differentiation of both forms is important because they have different pathogenetic mechanisms and require different therapeutic approaches. The encephalitic form often occurs in children and young women who have not had contact with the parasite until they are infected with a heavy load of Taenia solium eggs. In these

The acute encephalitic phase of neurocysticercosis: computed tomographic manifestations.
Brain infestation by Cysticercus cellulosae, the larval form of Taenia solium, is a common disorder in Mexico and other Latin American countries, Asia, Africa, and some Eastern European countries. Recent immigration has caused an increase in the number of cases of neurocysticercosis in the United States. This work describes the acute encephalitic form of neurocysticercosis in 26 cases. The clin...

Fifty four patients with a single parenchymal brain cysticercus in the acute encephalitic phase were studied to outline the features of this form of the disease. Seizures were the presenting symptom in all cases. Twenty six patients had a single seizure and 28 had several seizures before admission. Neurological examination was normal in 45 patients and showed focal signs in nine. All patients h...

متن کاملInteractions of Alphavirus nsP3 Protein with Host Proteins
Alphaviruses are members of the Togaviridae family and are grouped into two categories: arthritogenic and encephalitic. Arthritogenic alphavirus infections, as the name implies, are associated with arthritic outcomes while encephalitic alphavirus infections can lead to encephalitic outcomes in the infected host. Of the non-structural proteins (nsPs) that the viruses code for, nsP3 is the least ...
متن کاملAdolf Hitler had post-encephalitic Parkinsonism.
Adolf Hitler had Parkinson symptoms in 1934, at age 45 years. He may have had transient symptoms in 1923, at age 34 years. Young-onset parkinsonism, during the 1920s, favored a diagnosis of post-encephalitic rather than idiopathic parkinsonism. Hitler had oculogyric crises, phenomena only associated with post-encephalitic parkinsonism. In addition, he had dystonic facial spasms, palilalia and a...
